Exterior Painting

Aside from beautifying the appearance of a home, the primary purpose of exterior paint is to preserve and protect the exposed surfaces to which the coatings are applied. The most critical step in preserving, protecting and extending the life of the finished surface is the preparation of the surface before any paint or stain is applied. No matter the surface, whether it be wood, concrete, metal, stucco, vinyl, plastic, smooth or rough siding the first concern is to be sure that the finish bonds well to the surface.

Cleaning the exterior of dirt, mildew, algae, oxidation, and dust is the first and in most cases will require pressure washing the surface. Pressure washing usually is sufficient to clean exterior surfaces but in some instances additional cleaning methods or additives to the coatings may be necessary to achieve a good bond.

Applying primers is also a necessary requirement in certain instances and the use of primers can range in use depending upon the particular circumstance. The type of primer is also important because primers are only suited for the type of material for which it formulated.

Other more obvious steps is to replace or remove all deteriorated materials and to fill cracks and gaps. That Good Ole Handyman has the knowledge and experience guide you through the process. Contact us for more information.
